What Is Cupping Treatment and Does It Work?

Cupping treatment has been around for thousands of years. It’s an ancient healing therapy from traditional Middle Eastern and Chinese medicine. Over the years, cupping is effective in treating several physical issues.

How Is Cupping Performed?

An acupuncturist uses cups with a rounded opening to place on specific body parts, according to the issue being addressed. Typically, these cups are plastic or glass, but some are silicone, ceramic, metal, or bamboo.

The acupuncturist either heats the cup first or manually pumps to create suction. The cups remain on your skin for a few moments, during which the suction breaks open little blood vessels beneath the skin.

This increases blood flow to the cupped areas and promotes healing. The process also helps to clear the pores and draw toxins out of the body in the cupped area.

What Does Cupping Treat?

Cupping has several benefits and is used for many conditions. Some are listed below:

  • High blood pressure or hypertension

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Digestive issues, like IBD or IBS

  • Ongoing pain in the back, neck, shoulder, or knee

  • Asthma, bronchitis, or other breathing issues

  • Arthritis and fibromyalgia

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Skin problems, like acne and eczema

  • Fertility

  • Gynecological issues

  • Anemia, hemophilia, and other blood disorders

  • Varicose veins

For some conditions, such as pain relief, cupping is often the only treatment needed. For other conditions, such as asthma and high blood pressure, cupping is often used in conjunction with other treatments.

Cupping is also known to be an effective relaxation method, a lot like a deep tissue massage. Additionally, it can be used to help treat insomnia.
